The Way I Used To Be Book Review

!! WARNING: MENTION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AHEAD !!

The Way I Used To Be

Author: Amber Smith

Genre: Fiction

Overview:

Ok y'all, sit tight because this is gonna be a hard one for me. As someone who has experienced the torture of sexual assault and the brutal self-destruction, reinvention of yourself and trying to completely dissociate yourself from the version of you it happened to, this book hit me like a train. It was like I was reading a narrative book about me and boy was it gut wrenching (painfully so). In the book it showed Eden reflecting on what happened to her in 3rd person (Dissociation) and dwelling on how just one small action- one small change would've changed everything, preventing it from happening and jeez it was horror to read through that because it’s always the what-if’s that’ll kill you, watching her go through her high school years and all her phases, watching her self-destruct was gut wrenching and in some parts it made me feel physically ill to read her going down, self-turmoiling. Although it was a struggle to read, this is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read, it took me on such an emotional roller coaster. I was reliving my past through Eden and after reading this book there's only one thing I can say without losing my composure; to those who’ve experienced this,  you’ll be alright my loves.

Extra lil note:

I’ve already started reading the sequel to this book, “The Way I Am Now” so expect a review on that coming up very, very soon (possibly before the end of this week).

Rating:

10/10

Recommend ?

If you have a strong mind, yes most definitely, 100% read this book.

If you don’t have a strong mind, read with caution and a box of tissues.
